CPU Temperature is 80°C !!!

Hi all,

I have just mounted my new PC: CPU is a AMD X4 860K (no overclocking done) - Motherboard is Gigabyte F2A78M HD2 and ventirad/cpucooler is 212 Evo.

I have installed all drivers and when I installed CPUID HWM to monitor temperatures it's telling me CPU temp is 80°C when idle!!! BIOS is telling me 55°C just after starting up the computer.

I have changed thermal paste twice and there's no change... I have followed the proper method: cleaning up with a clean tissue and alcohol, apply thermal paste the size of a pea at the center of the cpu... All fans are running properly. I really can't see the reason why the CPU temp is so hot ...

Could it be the thermal sensors that are defective? I switched my computer off just in case because I don't want to see it melting... Am I missing something here?

Any help/advice or experience of the same would be of great help!

Thanks!

It looks as if your idle Thermal Margin is way out of wack. With only a difference of 5 degrees from idle to 100% load, you are good. I've never personally seen one that had a thermal margin so low at idle, though as you said, it's above 30C where you are at, so that might be some of it.

Hi, and thanks all for your messages I really appreciate the help!
AMD Overdrive gives me 36°C thermal margin. Is that good? (I'm just running Chrome at the moment)

Mr Kagouris I'm a bit afraid to stress it cause I have the feeling it's too hot and I don't want to melt it, would you advise me to try a game anyway and check CPUID HWM temps again?

Keep in mind that Thermal margin work in reverse, so the Higher the C shows, the cooler the CPU actually is. You can ignore the idle thermal margin temperature, it is mostly inaccurate even with AOD. make a 5 min stress test and check the margins then. 10C+ is acceptable, 20C+ is good.

You are absolutely right but having high temperatures from the start, it should nto be the case of thermal paste not "settling in" yet.

Although the Thermal Margin can be inaccurate during idle CPU times, I don't think I've seen one as low as 36C at idle. I would have a closer look at your CPU cooler. Make sure that the retention screws are tightened until they bottom out, so they don't turn any more. If this looks good, then you may want to remove your 212 EVO and check how well your TIM spread and if it was even and enough / too much. Of course after you remove it, you'll have to clean the old TIM and apply new TIM.

Hi,

I ran a stress test during 10 minutes with Aida64, the thermal margin went from 37°C (at idle) to 32°C (at 100% CPU load).
1. That's only 5°C difference, does it mean that indeed the thermal margin at idle is inaccurate?
2. Is 32°C thermal margin at 100% CPU load worrying?

Aida 64 is giving me temperatures that I think/hope are more realistic than CPUID HWM, see screenshot.

The retention screws were tightened all the way down, I stopped tightening as soon as I felt I reached the limit.

One factor I haven't mentionned: I live in the Southern hemisphere and the ambient air temperature is hot as hell these days (30 to 40°C), would that have an impact on inaccuracy of idle temps?

Any feedback would be great on those results! Many thanks again to tomshardware awesome community!
