Can I run 1866mhz RAM in my ASUS H81m-D that only supports 1600mhz?

hi guys, im planning to buy a kingston hyperx 1866 for my asus h81m-D because i want to max my mobo at 16gb of RAM,
can i run the 1866speed in my mobo?
system specs
i54460
r9 380 4gb
asus h81m-d
seasonic s12 620

  1. Maybe but I don't recommend it. You should look up the memory list for the board and buy something from that list.

    Now it could work, and downclock to the right speed, but there are no guarantees and things like the timings come into play where you could have compatibility issues. That is why using the tested memory list is the best way to go when buying memory.
  2. I believe the MOBO downclocks the RAM to 1600, so yes, technically it will run, but at 1600, i also believe you can overclock it but the difference in speed is so negligible you shouldn't
