I am limited in size by my case. What would be the best CPU cooler with overclocking in mind? Has to be under 148mm. CPU is a 4690k. Not interested in water cooling right now. I don't care about price much.

Solution

No, you are incorrect, and why would you assume that because your cooler has lasted 5 years (I'd hope any cooler would) that that automatically is justification for water coolers being #1 and every water cooler being 5-year minimum reliable and better than air coolers?

Air coolers are often 3/5 the price for the same performance. In addition, they assist in case airflow, make less noise typically, and no worrying about leaks.

Not really it's not that much better than anything. You also have to worry about more than you would with air cooling.

I don't have the time right now to water cool. I need this rig up and running in the next few days. One day I might do water. Maybe next year.

My case is a Fractal Design Core 1000. I have a Micro-Atx board. The build will include a GPU and three drives. It's pretty crowded in there.

Do you feel the H7 will allow me to get a decent overclock?

Oh yeah the h7 should allow you to get a decent overclock probably. Hyper 212 evos don't do too bad and the H7 is better than it.

Nice, it looks like the H7 is popular for a reason.

I can't wait to get this new system up and running.

The H7 is the unit I came up with too but I was curious if there were other options. I wish Noctua had something good for overclocking in that size.

Probably will end up buying the H7.

I have had a few Noctua coolers. I love them. I don't mind paying for a premium cooler.

In doing research for this build, a lot of people said the NH-U9S and the NH-D9L were not adequate for overclocking. True or false?

They also make the NH-C14S. Not sure about this one as it's a top flow.

My main goal is to achieve the coolest temps I can in my case with an air cooler.

When I first started researching coolers for this build, I was going to go with that one too.

The H7 is tough to beat....... Might have to just order it now.

LinusTechTips did a video of a Noctua NH-D15 vs a Corsair H70 and the Noctua NH-D15 won. So there is a thing as an air cooler beating a liquid cooler. Also I have a liquid cooler (Corsair H100i) my temps are amazing never hit 50c before with a 4790k at stock. So yes it is amazing, I wasn't saying it was bad.
