HDD failure, need to recover data

I have a 500gb WD HDD that's very old, and a friend of mine was using it and ended up doing something to the account of formatting the drive, and then unplugging it mid-format. I still have information I HAVE to have off of it, and I cannot afford a professional recovery service.

When I plug it into a computer it doesn't register at all, even in disk management. It makes popping noises and gets very loud when I plug it in.

I need to know if a platter transfer, or replacing the board would have any chance of fixing it long enough to get the data I need back.

Update:

Here is the link to the picture of the PCB:

"Popping noises" might be the wrong way to explain it. It's more like someone is tapping the hdd cover from the inside with their fingernail.

And if I need to replace parts/platter and need a cleanroom I would do something similar to this if I had to:

Solution
Firstly, there is no way anyone without access to a great cleanroom and very very expensive tools can transfer platters - they need to be perfectly aligned, and with no dust.

Can you expand further on the 'popping noises'? Can you post a pic of the PCB where the connections are?
