Moving a hard drive to a new computer

I'm building a new PC and am getting many new parts, I plan on replacing the motherboard, video card, etc. My current computer came with Windows 8.1 already installed, I don't have a disc for it.
I do, however, have the activation key. Is there any way I can use my current computer to do a fresh install of 8.1 onto a disc, then reformat the hard drive, put the hard drive and disc into my new computer and install it?

Hello there!

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the same activation code for your OS on the newly built PC. Upgrading to a different motherboard requires you to install a new genuine Windows OS. Operating systems communicate with the motherboard, whereas the hard drive is just a storage carrier for the system files. (for further queries, contact MS support)
However, you can still use the old HDD but you'd definitely need to backup your data from it somewhere else beforehand. Since this hard drive used to be your primary OS HDD, you'd need to reformat it in order to avoid any booting/performance issues with the new system.

Good luck!
