Best ~$200-300 upgrade. i5 6400 (overclock?) + MSI Z170A vs. 750TI+AMD FX-6300?

Until now I've been fine running my gaming/multimedia build on mid-low settings while multitasking without any problems but I'm looking to make some upgrades. Hopefully $200-300 at a time, a part a month or so, without losing full function of my desktop. (i.e. switching to an i5/7 or xeon and having to wait another month for a mobo.) I'd like to be able to run games, Diablo III, LoL etc. with a vm, along side other tasks (light torrenting, watching videos/internet browsing etc.) without having any major drops in fps. Eventually I know I have to get everything replaced as its been almost half a decade, but the build has sentimental value since I built it back in college. Taking the "don't fix what isn't broken" approach I haven't really been able to decide on what to upgrade since everything was purchased around the same time ~2009.

Currently:

AMD 965 @ 3.7-4.0ghZ on Noctua cooler
ASrock 970 Extreme3
8GB 1600ddr3 gskill
evga 550ti
240gb ocz agility 3 + 2TB HD
600-700w psu thermaltake?
CM scout case
Win10 64

My plan was to..
1) 550ti ->evga 750ti or asus R7 370[$99/$139 respectively at the local Frys. (with the extra cash I could pick up a 6300)]
or
2) AMD 965 -> i5 6400+MSI Z170A Krait(CPU/MOBO combo also on sale ~300)

Would a 6300 still be viable for another 5 years? I remember hearing that the skylake is overclockable, by changing the blk on specific bios however there would be no temp readouts and would run 100% all the time. Not that I'm looking for record overclock but knowing that its a possibility would be nice.

I think I'd go the other route - Haswell i5 - 4460 or 4690 - and H97 board. Upgrade the GPU down the line, but it should be able to handle the games you mentioned fine with the 550ti, and newer games with a graphics upgrade down the line (wait for Pascal to come out and the GTX 9xx series will get cheaper).
