I know it was stupid and you don't do that, but I did it. I was copying some files and I had the hdd outside of the case. I took it in my hands and accidentally touched the circuit board. Everything froze and stopped working. I restarted the pc and it couldn't boot. I kept getting an error.. which code i can't remember... It said that this happens when you disconnect a usb, cd etc. while working and that I should remove the unnecessary drives and reboot.

Now I plugged it in another pc and I'm trying to backup some files and It's copying very slow.. After that I want to format the windows partition and reinstall windows.

Will that help or did I do permanent damage?

What else should I do?

Sorry for the delay.

Unfortunately, it seems that there are some bad sectors on the drive that were reallocated.(reallocated sectors count)
The thing is that you can't really fix that. Bad sectors would eventually continue to appear until the HDD becomes completely unresponsive.

You can give another tool a try. If you get similar results, just replace the drive.

Hi there BlenderMan_,

That is really unpleasant. :(
As you can transfer the data, even though slowly, my suggestion would be not to interrupt the process and back up all the data that you need.
After that, you can test the drive with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Depending on the results, you will know if the HDD can be used or not. Look for pending/reallocated/uncorrectable sectors in the SMART report.

Let me know how this goes,

I'm trying the dosdlg from WDC and I started an extended test. I don't know how much it takes or if it works because there is I can't see any progress bar or something that tells me that it's doing anyting. I guess I'll just leave it open overnight and see in the morning if it did anything.

I'll give you an update tomorrow.
