Is it possible to use an OEM version of Win7 when upgrading the mobo and cpu?

I have had an AMD system for awhile now, but I wish to make the switch to Intel as soon as possible. Currently running a FX-8350 and use DDR3 RAM, but my mobo isn't compatible with the 8350 (my RAM is fine), so instead of throwing in the money to fix that, I'd rather just make the switch. Besides, my favorite games like Squad run like you-know-what on AMD.

Now, being the little E-1 poor soldier I am, I'd prefer to keep cost down to the minimum. A big chunk of that would be Win7, but since I have it already on my HDD, would it be possible to keep it or at least reinstall it?

Thanks in advance, save me some money today

OEM is tied to the first motherboard it's installed on. That said, Microsoft has been somewhat lax in enforcing that policy and when you call to activate they just might let it go. But, understand that they are under no obligation to allow the transfer. Also keep in mind that you cannot have the same activation running on two machines simultaneously. Sooner or later one or both will be flagged and disabled permanently.

all you can do is give it a shot. might work as is but may also take a call to MS to activate it.

i have never personally had any issue reusing keys but others apparently have. so easiest way is just to give it a shot and see what happens. more than likely you will be able to get it running unless it is on a separate pc already. in this case MS will catch up to you and disable them both.

If you feel like trying:

1. Un-register Windows from old box.
2. Install on new box.
3. When it comes to time to register, and it complaints, hopefully it displays a ph# to call. Do that, it will take you to a long and tedious, but automated registration process. When asked how many machine, SAY ONE. And hopefully that does it.
