Hello my name is Josh, my PC has been working perfectly for about 2 and a half years, until now it shuts off randomly as if the power was pulled, after 30 seconds or so it turns back on and starts up normally no notifications, It did this about 3 times over the course of a month before hand, but was able to reboot the pc and the game and play without issues..

But now its a regular problem, and it is also when this ticking sound started, at first it was extremely high pitch and almost unbearable to listen to but i turned off C1E in my BIOS and the issue is still there, but its much more quiet and is just a low constant ticking sound now, never did that before this restarting issue..

I was thinking it may be an overheating problem so iv been monitoring during games, and it seems the pc does not turn off when the room is cold while playing a game like dying light. But it still turns off during Rust. (which is more cpu intensive) My gpu temp was 90+ before i cranked up the fan speed while it was in room temp.. Now its at 80C and below when gaming in a cold room and usually 40c idol room temp. It obviously needs new paste but not sure if thats the cause of the restarting issue.

so i was thinking maybe my cpu, but its temps during gameplay at 57C during dying light which works if the room is cold, and 45C during Rust which turns off regardless..

So im no longer sure if its a heating problem.

Also i noticed that when turning my pc into Power Saving Mode stops the ticking sound, and i can turn it back on by switching to Balanced, and the sound literally corresponds with me switching between the 2 settings..

This is my first time ever posting an issue like this on a forum.

Thank you for your time reading this and your consideration of helping.

My Specs are below

Age: 2.5 years old, but GPU and PSU 1 year old
Model: ASUS Desktop PC M51BC Series
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor 3.50 GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Fire Storm Nvidia GTX 760 2 gb (was using overclocked for a while)
OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
PSU: ThermalTake TR2 600 W

Solution
Hello... Yes, the Voltage drop your seeing is not Good... you want a stable 12vdc output for your Video card and CPU to use... this seems to point the problem at the PS.

Wow thank you for the quick responses.. Ironsounds i have the case open and i have tried really hard to listen to where its coming from but its hard, i have also tried a rolled up piece of paper but im not certain but i think its coming from the cpu motherboard area, sound was louder when i was in between the cpu and psu, but im quite certain its not coming from the power supply, not sure tho..

Turkey Sratch thats what im starting to think too, i just had my system restart 10 min ago, at 40c gpu and 37c cpu.. so its not overheating, and everything online points to the PSU with those symptoms...

im just wondering it only happens during games, and one time when i was impatient waiting for it to boot up, i was opening up programs real quick after startup, Steam, firestorm overclocker, and than speedfan and thats when my display turned off as if the pc shutdown, but the pc was still on..

Unplugging, changing channels did nothing and forced me to hold the power button.. that happened twice the same way basically.

My question is, as it never messes up when browsing the net, watching better call saul or anything non game related, is it possible for a PSU to work normally when not under load? and only mess up when its having to step it up?

Im guessing your going to say yes.

But it also does not answer the issue with the sounds my pc is making, but makes me thing they are related as the sound stops when the pc is in power saving, and starts up again when i put it to Balanced..

Thank you guys for helping me diagnose this problem..

Its weird tho, because again i does not restart on Dying Light, but only if the room is cold or maybe a series of coincidences have led me to think that its only because the room is cold i dont know, I do know i make it cold as hell for precaution, i played for about 6 hours yesterday no problem, and 3 to 5 hours the day before, but Rust caused it to restart within 10 to 1 min, Rust is also a more cpu and memory intensive game also..

Hello... 1) Temperature related problems are common due to bad solder/solder joints... And could be what you experiencing. Could be the MB or PS as you have narrowed down with your hearing... a different PS to test with the MB, would be a good next step... know somebody with a spare PS?

I do not know anyone with a spare power supply, thats my issue and im short on cash, so i dont really want to go buy a new power supply yet until im sure thats the issue..

I have been monitoring the voltages of it and i was reading online that 12v dipping down to 11.4 - 2 can cause system instability.

But it runs at its normal 12.004 when at desktop, but during a game it dips to 11.5 to 11.4 and than sometimes dips a bit lower to 3, 2 and even 11.1

So according to others that is quite bad and could be what im experiencing.. Because i get no BSOD just a black screen as if i lost power..

So is that the problem? is it bad that 12v drops down to 11.4 to 11.2 during games?

Because honestly i hope all i have to do is just replace the PSU..

Found out what the static sounding noise was.. Turns out its PSU Coil whine..

Thank you for the help and reassurance, for the sake of putting a solution to a problem, i will report back on the outcome of switching power supplies..
