So i have an AMD fx 8350 on a 990fxa gigabyte mobo with a 212 hypercooler evo, ive checked cpuid hwm, speed fan, and amd overdrive and temps are consistent through all 3. running about 42 c idle. my concern is when i run prime95, tmpin1 in hwm rises to 56 c while the others stay fairly stable around 45 c. so im wondering why the difference, is this normal, and is it any concern for moving forward with an overclock. in addition, i have two case fans that, while they do run, dont seem to show in speed fan, overdrive, or hwm, this is my first build and was done about 5 months ago.

The only way to get truly accurate temperature readings on a AMD FX processor is with AMD Overdrive. Use the software just to monitor your temperatures, never use it to actually overclock. All overclocking should ALWAYS be done in bios. HWmonitor can display false temps so when your running Prime 95 monitor your temps through Overdrive.

As CountMike said the Hyper 212 EVO should be good for overclocks on the FX 8350 typically up to 4.4Ghz. If you want to push your rig further than that you will need better cooling. With the NH-D15 you have the proper cooling for a 5Ghz overclock, if your chip did well in the "chip lottery" and is binned well enough to hit 5Ghz.
