I just replaced everything in my case except for my HD, all of my files are still here. But my OS claims it is not activated on this "new" device. I know I could probably reinstall Windows but that would wipe my HD, and I don't want to do that. Is there another way?

Solution
The reason it's not activated is that you need to purchase a new license for the new hardware. Your previous OS install is tied to the old motherboard. In some cases you can call MicroSoft and they will activate your computer manually, but generally you need to purchase a new license.

If you have a retail license you should be able to get it reactivated legally otherwise you will need to insert a new key for the OS this can be done without a reinstall through the System Item in the control panel. This will allow you to change your key just remember to get the same type of license if you do so. (7 Home, 8 Pro, etc) But yeah anytime you change the Motherboard that windows is installed onto it will deactivate.

just go to the activation, select by phone and ring ms. if you don't automatically get a new key and have to speak to someone, just tell them you changed your motherboard as it went pop.
