I have built my computer a little while back, however, the on-board sound doesn't support the 3d sound on my astro a40's. So I was going to get a new sound card with an optical in/out. However my motherboard doesn't have any 1x slots which is what these sound cards need.

My motherboard is this: https://cdn.pcpartpicker.com/static/forever/images/product/9a912307aa8b3d43c22a139dbfd54399.med.1600.jpg (Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard)

My chosen sound card is this:

I am wondering if it is possible to put this card in one of the slots it wasn't designed for? Such as 8x or 16x? And would it affect anything else negatively if I were to do so. The only slot being used right now is one 16x with a gtx 960 in it. Thanks!
