Can a linux host run a Windows XP VM?

I've been thinking about building a new PC with linux because it's free and I would like its features. Now in a gamer but that's why I have a Windows PC as well.but anyways I want to run a Windows xp or 7 VM on a linux host (using VMware) is that possible? This will be my first time using linux

Yes, but the GPU performance will be terrible. It's not suitable for gaming. If you want to game on Windows and run linux you're better off setting your system to dual-boot both OSes (in which case install Windows First then Linux).
