Hello friends,

I am planning to get an i5 4690 and gtx 960 4gb for my gaming build and overclock the 960. Do you think that this is a good idea to get 60 fps on present games at ultra and at console settings in future. I have - wd blue 1tb, kingston 8gb ddr3 1333hz and asus b85m - g mobo + corsair vs550.

What do you guys think?

Thanks btw.

Good way to go, imo. Make sure your PSU is up to the task though. I would personally recommend the R9 380 for a little more power, but the 960 is a great GPU as well. Check out jet.com you can usually pick up a locked Haswell i5 or 4GB 960/380 for $160ish with their 15NOW promo. 60+ FPS is no problem for most games 2014 and earlier at the highest settings. Newer AAA games will have you sitting mostly between 45-60 FPS at highest settings @1080p. Some games are just poorly optimized and you may only see around 30FPS, but don't blame your setup usually in these instances.

Well, this brings up a couple of questions:

1. What resolution?
2. It won't play all AAA titles on ultra at 60 fps, do you have specific titles you are looking at?
3. Why are you going for 1333 ram?

No real need to overclock the GTX 960 if your just doing 1080p unless your trying to squeeze every FPS out of it.
I would go with 8gb 1600hz rather then 1333hz.

Skylake has been a very difficult generation for me. The i5/i7-4XXX has been a very good generation and performance wise their hasn't been a good reason to upgrade. If I were to build a 1080p gaming system I would probably go with the slightly slower (and cheaper) i5-6400 with GTX 960, 8gb DDR4 and stick it in a HTPC case so I can fit it snugly under my 55" HDTV.

All of the USB 3.1, DDR4 and all that jazz is nice to have but the main reason would be the heat. After years of powerhouse builds I am getting sick of my room being 180 degrees when I game. But the build you chose should have no problem running games at 1080p.

No no no! You guys are getting this wrong. Sorry for the misinformation but I already have a i3 4130 and gtx 750 which explains why I have the other parts.
Let me clarify -
1) I will replace my cpu and gpu only with i5 4690 and gtx 960 4gb.
2) I am not changing the ram because haswell didnt show any major improvement with increase in ram speed.
3) I will be playing on my Dell S2240L which means that I will be playing at 1080p.
4) I would like to run games from 2014 and earlier to play at ultra and the recent ones at high/console settings to get 60fps. I might go upto ultra if I can get 30fps lock depending on the genre of game.

I hope the above clarifies things. So please just tell me whether the upgrade to i5 4690 and gtx 960 4gb will be fine or not for the above things. Thanks.

Ah, I see. You will not be upgrading your motherboard so you need a chip with the same socket.
Your RAM should still be upgraded to at least 8gb IMHO.
If you are not chaining your MB then start with upgrading your graphics card and your RAM first, you might find you can hit your desired resolution/FPS without a chip upgrade. At the very least it will allow you to spread out your purchases.
