I live in a home with matal lath supporting the plaster walls. My Cisco EA6500 just won't communicate more than 20ft thru these walls. I have a room with my router and desktop but my laptop and Xbox are in another room. What router will provide the signal strength I need ?

Solution
Al non commercial WiFi devices are limited to 100mW or 120 depending on which part of the world. You can make it better by using larger and/or directional antenna. Normally they have 2 - 5dB antenna but 18dB+ are also available.

You can always ping the internet into another room, To get the full signal cost maybe around 20 dollars or so.. Get a hold of Cisco and ask if they can hook that all up for you.

I've talked to several sales people in stores such as Best Buy, Micro Center, etc. and they claim most routers have a similar output wattage. The big difference is in the speeds, more money .... more speed. Yet the extender vendors claim they have a higher output wattage than the routers, maybe 10 times as much (but no specifics). I have an extender, mounted on the wall just on the other side from my router and it has not helped. I suspect even the extender has trouble picking up the signal from the router - that's why I'd like to find a router with a stronger signal.

I haven't solved this yet. Using a Cisco RE4000W extender seemed to help only slightly. Of interest is the comment about antenna as the EA6500 antenna are internal so it's nothing I can change. Would a router with external antennas provide a significant improvement ?

External antenna can help, especially removable one. Typical antenna that come with router has 2 - 5dB gain while you can get and change to 17 or 20dB. Even better antennae are directional. Another problem is that emitter is limited to 100 -120mW depending where you live.
