is it worth going 1440p or should i just stay at 1080p?

Solution
Monitors are the most important part of a computer system. Get the best you can. I have 30 inch 2560X1600 displays for work and play. They are amazing. But they cost about $1,000. Get a 27 inch 2560X1440. You will not go back.

Ditto. Have a 24" TN 1080, bought an Overlord Tempest(27" IPS 1440). Night and day(the little Dell ain't bad, but it's chicken feed in comparison). If you can afford it, get a gaming widescreen, they're even better than the 27" 1440. My widescreen is not really a gamer, but if I could only keep one, I'd keep the Dell 34" widescreen.
Like Oleg said, if you're fine with 1080, then stick with. It doesn't require as much graphics muscle to run really well, and that graphics muscle also costs more, besides the monitor, and then a better cpu as well, so as not to cause imbalance and bottlenecks. Becomes a vicious circle, which is fine if you have 3000 bucks.

What kind of games do you play and what kind of system do you have?
If you play pretty stuff and you can run it: go for it
If you play stuff that require a minimum of 60 fps and you can't currently maintain 120 fps you might want to A) stick with 1080, B) make investments beyond te monitor.

2560*1440 is 80% more pixels than 1920*1080 and demand a (mostly) similar increase in horsepower to utilize.
