Hey there again, imDLT!

Have you tried using a different USB cable and connecting the external to a different port/computer? I'd definitely check up on the health and SMART status with the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics, though. I'd also recommend you try it on another computer and see how the WD Elements will be recognized there. If it still behaves the same way, then you should probably consider contacting a professional data recovery company that will assist you with the file retrieving. :( If the WD Elements has failed, you won't be able to recover your files by physically tampering with the hardware. You'd need a specific room environment & technical skill set to do that.

Hope this helps, though!

Welcome to the community, imDLT!

Unfortunately, you shouldn't have opened the enclosure of your WD Elements because it voids the warranty on the product! :( I'd strongly recommend you to download and run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. The tests will help us determine the health and SMART status of the WD Elements drive. I'd also advise you to backup all important data from it immediately somewhere else before proceeding with the troubleshooting.

Keep me posted & Good luck!
