So, today I got my cpu(i7-4970k) delivered, I have everything else i need(minus the 8 more gbs of ram so i can get 16 out of 32 gbs max) This version of windows was pre installed when I got this. So I know I cant use this HDD in the new Rig. If i upgrade to windows 10( mind this is for a gaming computer, but iv heard decent things about it so far) Will it get rid of this version of Windows 7 so I can just plug in this HDD to the new rig and use it then? or will it still be locked to this computer.

Solution
You can get a license from Newegg for example. 100$ for a OEM/System builder license and 120$ for a full retail license (can be transferred to a new computer). You can also buy a digital copy (license key only).

If your current computer came with Windows 7 pre-installed then it should be a OEM license which can't be transferred to another computer. Upgrading to Windows 10 first won't change this, you need to buy a new license for your new computer.

The original OS is locked to the motherboard and other major hardware. When you upgrade to windows 10 it will still be tied to original system. I recently built a new computer and ordered a cheap OEM version of Windows 7 for 55 bucks that I can upgrade to windows 10. It will be tied to my new system but it was cheaper than paying full price for a new key.

You can use an OEM license on 1 computer. You can buy a full unrestricted copy of Windows to use on any computer but can only have 1 copy active at the time. I have a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate running right now as I write this and have over time used it on 3 computers. the catch is that it cost $300.00 . You can if you look around find OEM versions with say a 3 use license that is still cheaper than a full license and you can then install on multiple machines . It's all in how much money you're willing to spend. The reason I bought the OEM version was to test Windows 10 on my new build without upgrading full version of Ultimate. After a month or so you loose the ability to roll back to earlier Windows version.

Go to Amazon in upper left corner hover over " shop by dept. " go to Electronics & Computers, in that pop out go to software and click on it. When new page comes up click on Operating Systems . scroll down and look for what you want. I'm looking at Windows 7 pro 32 bit and 64 bit for as low as $54.00 and Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32bit (OEM) System Builder DVD 1 Pack (For Refurbished PC Installation) for $46.00. These are on a CD and come with an activation key. If you're not on Amazon Prime you can sign up for a month long free trial and maybe get free shipping to boot. That's 50% of the price for a key from Newegg
