Can I use two different manufacturer's,capacity RAM?

I use a Gigabyte H61M motherboard. It supports 16 GB RAM and has two slots. My current one's from Twinmos, it's 8 GB and 1600 Mhz. Can I add another RAM which is from Corsair, 8 GB in capacity and speed's 1600 MHz.

Also, what is Dual-channel memory? How's it work?

Dual channel uses 2 RAM chips together as if they were one larger RAM chip to increase the speed. It improves performance but not by as much as you might expect. Yes you can mix RAM from different manufacturers and it will probably work but nobody can guarantee that it will, especially in dual channel mode which needs the two chips to be very close in performance.

Dual channel kits became available because mixing RAM types or even different batches from the same manufacturer proved unreliable and caused a lot of problems. You are always better off to use a matched pair if you want a stable system.

What are you needing 16GB of RAM for? depending on what you use the PC for you may not even notice a difference. If you do need more RAM...
It`s not recommended, to avoid problems you should always buy a kit of memory with a matched pair of memory modules or ram sticks.

If you wish to go for another brand of memory, make sure you read off the information on the sticker of the current memory in the system.

So you have the correct speed, and latency timing values eg: 9-9-9: 24 and also the voltage at normal mode and if the current module is XMP memory capable should be 1.65v XMP 1.5v to 1.55 without xmp mode enabled ok.


Then check the specs of the new memory module you intend to buy.
Matching the settings detailed on the first 8Gb stick you have in your system.

Right Dual Channel memory mode.

Basically it pairs the two memory sticks together.
Each memory stick is 64 bits wide in what we call bus width.
Pair them together and you get a Memory bus width for data transfer of 128 Bits wide.

More data can be accessed in one read or write request to and from the system memory.
128 bits per request or pass.

64+64=128 bits.

Less time spend having to request data and more accessed in one request or pass.

In none technical terms.

A larger water pipe holds more water in it due to the size, or diameter of the pipe, as a more simple visual explanation.
So it runs faster, and the bath fills quicker.
At a quicker rate
It takes less time to fill the bath.

What are you needing 16GB of RAM for? depending on what you use the PC for you may not even notice a difference. If you do need more RAM the safest option is to buy a matched pair and sell your old RAM. If you buy a single chip and install it with your existing one you are basically rolling the dice.
