So as the title states I was just upgrading my GPU driver for a new game I just got. During installation I got the BSOD with video_tdr_failure error. Then it gets stuck in a loop of black screen and BSOD before just settling on a black screen. At that point my PC and all fans are on, but there's nothing on the screen. And I don't think I can even get it into safe mode due to there being nothing displayed. I'm not really sure where to go at this point so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs that i remember off the top of my head:
Processor: AMD FX-8320
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960
OS: Windows 8.1
8GB of RAM, don't remember brand
Samsung 250GB SSD
650W PSU, don't remember brand
MSI gaming series mobo, don't remember specific model number

I also can't access any error dumps due to there being no display.

Update: was able to boot into safe mode

Update 2: fixed with SinxarKnight's recommendation! The driver was the culprit and had to boot into safe mode with networking, download the previous driver, and search for it on the computer and install it manually. Restarted and it works!

Solution
Yeah it is a known issue with the latest driver. I didn't update but my brother did and we had a hell of a time fixing it. You need to restart into safe mode then you can try to uninstall the driver. If you are unable to uninstall it, you can grab DDU and run it in safe mode to remove the driver like that. To get into safe mode, you need to spam F8 after the BIOS screen but just before Windows starts. It may take a few tries but it is possible.

You can also try to unplug all but your main monitor and see if it will start up. Seems to be an issue with multi-monitor setups.

Look at the nvidia forum as well: https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/33/geforce-drivers/ many people are having this issue and there are better examples on...

Thanks so much for the reply! I probably wouldn't have even updated it but The Division wouldn't open and I figured that was the issue.

I was able to get into safe mode finally. I went into the device manager and found my GPU but it wouldn't let me uninstall. It did update from there but we'll see if that actually solved it or not.
