Skylake v. Haswell-E for SLI gaming in 4K?

Hi guys, I have two GTX 980 Ti's in SLI, sitting on an ASUS Z97-A mobo with i5-4690K. Right now, I can play many games on 4K at 60fps, but, then again, some games run just a little under, especially at max setting (or not consistently anyway).

So, I'm wondering whether upgrading the CPU and chipset might do the trick.

Specifically, I'm debating between:

1) i7-6700K
2) i7-5930K

Thoughts?

You may assume that in either case, I would get a high-end mobo to go with the CPU.

(BTW, depending on what the new Nvidia cards look like later this year, I may well upgrade the GPUs as well, so please don't reply simply with "you're limited by the GPUs".)

There isn't much of a difference between the cpu's listed and the one you have. Most games can't use hyperthreading or 6 cores. The best thing you could do would overclock. The higher the resolution the less the cpu really matters.

You might see a small <5 fps improvement in a few games and nothing in others. If you were running a lower resolution and 144Hz you might have seen slightly more improvement but not much more. A 4690k is so strong even without an overclock it doesn't seem worth it. I'd wait at least another cpu generation

Thanks for your answer. But let's say that, for reasons I won't get into here, I will be getting a new CPU and mobo later this year. Given that I want to continue with SLI (be it with these cards or some others), which CPU would be better?

For instance, 6700K supports only16 PCIe lanes, whereas 5930K supports 40. Does that make no difference for SLI? I.e., is there no difference between x8/x8 versus x16/x16? On the other hand, the upcoming Kaby Lake seems somewhat promising and has the same 1151 socket as the current Skylake, so that might be a consideration. (Some rumors say Kaby Lake will support 24 lanes, so x16/x8 should be possible.)
