Wireless adapter disables when connecting to 5ghz band

I have an ALFA dual band usb 3.0 dongle and a netgear nighthawk R7000 router. When I first got the set up I used the 2.4ghz band because the location of the router did not allow for the 5ghz band to perform reliably. I was able to connect to it, only at a <40% signal strength. Now we relocated the router closer, and the realtek lan usb software can see the 5ghz network at 100%.

When I connect to the 5ghz however, it disables my adapter completely. I can't even reconnect to the 2.4ghz band until I unplug+replug the dongle. Resetting the adapter doesn't work, I have to unplug it.

This problem occurs whether it is plugged into usb3 or usb2. UPNP is enabled on the router. Other devices are able to connect to and use the 5ghz frequency without issue. I turned off my firewall and virus protection software on my pc, and there are no security settings on the router that should prevent this device from connecting.

Any insight would be appreciated.
