My computer is in need of a better CPU cooler since my old TX3 Evo isn't really cutting it. However I have heard that some 3rd-party coolers can damage the CPU so I'm wary about just going ahead and buying one. I was going to install a Noctua NH-D15 as it came highly recommended but unfortunately because of the layout of the motherboard the mounting brackets do not fit so it can't be used. Those cylindrical things I don't know the name of around the socket get in the way. Does anyone have any recommendations?

14nm runs relatively cool so exotic cooling is not really needed.
I find a Noctua NH-U12s to be perfectly adequate even with a 4.8 OC on a i5-6600K.
The s suffix coolers are high compatibility versions with improved clearance for graphics cards and high ram heat spreaders.
I had no problem mounting on a Maximus VIII gene, and would be surprised if you would have a problem with a full sized ATX that is similar.
Here is their compatibility list, it includes several maximus viii motherboards.
Past that, they have said that their mounting system does not put any bending pressure on skylake processors.
