Ok I get the error " Fail to copy image "

I replaced my old toshiba mk5065gsx with toshiba mq01abf050

I took out my old HDD and put in my new HDD, inserted restore discs. They seemed to copy all files on disc, but failed at completeing restore.

Solution
I would blame it on the DVD since it's a restore disk and is therefore intended for use with the hardware that your computer was originally manufactured with. Since you've replaced the HDD, you'll get that error. Why not just get an install disk of Windows 10? Just be sure to get an install disk and not a recovery disk.

Additionally, if you have another computer, download the media creation here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and create an install DVD or USB flash drive to use in your problem computer. All you'll need then is an activation code which you'll have thirty days before you lose features from not activating, so thirty days to get the code. Just make sure that you get the right bit (32-bit or 64-bit) that is best for your specific computer, and that you get a key for the right edition of Windows 10 (PRO key for the PRO version, Home key for the Home version). If you list the specs of your machine I can tell you which out of the four possibilities would work best for your machine.

it appears to be working after i switched to IDE i think it was and not AHCI? I don't know i read it somewhere on here.

how would i get a install disc of windows 10? I was just going to update it after windows was installed

Once you download the Media Creation Tool from the website I linked, go ahead and run it. Then it'll prompt you to agree to terms and select a version, just say Windows 10 (64-bit) and run the setup program while Windows 7 is already running so that it does an upgrade and not a clean install. As long as it's an upgrade, it'll automatically activate off of the code in Windows 7, assuming Windows 7 is activated.

So I downloaded the windows 10 64 bit.

Can i put this onto USB and load it onto my laptop with new HDD? Then can i activate it by providing my windows 7 key later?

Yes. Once you start from the USB stick, just select Windows 10 Home (since your key is for home and not pro) and don't enter your product key at the first chance. Leave the product key blank during the install and put it in through the settings app and activate once you're properly online. Be sure to activate within thirty days or else you'll lose access to premium features like Skype, Windows Update, custom wallpapers, etc.

I don't know. This is what it says

You’ve been routed to this page because the operating system you’re using won’t support the Windows 10 media creation tool and we want to make sure you can download Windows 10. To use the media creation tool, visit the Microsoft Software Download Windows 10 page from a Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 device.
You can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) that can be used to install or reinstall Windows 10. The image can also be used to create installation media using a USB flash drive or DVD.

I downloaded Win10_1151_Eng_64bit. Put on USB and it didnt work. i'll try this link on my laptop with the old HDD and see if that changes anything

I wiped my hard drive a couple weeks ago. It's bare but broken.

Didn't know the recovery cd's wouldn't work, but makes sense. But i have my windows 7 product key on the back of my laptop, so if i can get this to work i'll be set.

Thanks for your help. It seems to be installing windows 10 after i downloaded on a windows 7 or newer computer.

EDIT: it failed at the finishing up stage of installation, reason for error was "corrupt partition"

Could these be because i tried installing windows 7 twice? and that installed something on my HDD?

Now all it says is BOOTMGR is missing but that won't be hard to get rid of.

Given this new information, there is something physically wrong with your HDD. This is easily corrected, but requires some knowledge of how to use command prompt. First, put in your bootable flash drive you created earlier and boot to it. When it prompts you for your region and input method enter them as normal and hit next. On the next screen where it says Install, don't click install. Instead, click "Repair your computer", once inside the repair menu, click troubleshoot, then advanced options, then command prompt. Once command prompt opens, type "chkdsk C: /r" without the quotation marks and let it run. Once that finishes finding and attempting to repair bad sectors, type "exit".

After exiting, you should be back to the repair your computer menu, you want to choose troubleshoot again, then choose advanced options, then advanced options.

If this doesn't help, reply to this forum.

So i bought windows 10 for my new desktop that I am making. Will the windows 10 usb installation work the same way? Can i use my windows 7 key to get a activation code after installation?

Here is a update: I did actually managed to get past the installation of windows and it told me to take out the USB. HOWEVER the setup is taking FOREVER. After i finished the download last night I had it running for a couple hours, went to bed then restarted today. About 6 hours ago It restarted then came on and asked me for my WI-FI password and now it's been just showing the windows icon with the loading circle.
