Hello.

I have a couple of old computers and I'm deciding which one to use for a Minecraft server. I have looked at the server requirements page on the MC wiki, and it makes me ponder about which one to use because they both have dissimilar specs.

Dell Demension 8300 (Intel Pentium 4, single core hyper-threaded 3.0 GHz; 3GB DDR memory; 800 MHz FSB).

Dell Inspiron 531 (AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000+, dual core 2.1 GHz; 4GB DDR2 memory; 800 MHz FSB).

Also, my internet upload speed is 1.5 Mbps, though Speedtest.net reads about 1.8 on average. The wiki says 3 at least, but 1 will just bearly work. I know this will be a bit of a drawback, but I would like to know how badly this drawback will be.

Please tell me if you need more information or if I missed something.

Thank you.

Equipment: 64-bit Windows 10, MSI Z87 mother board, Intel i5 4690K 4-core 3.5GHz processor (OCed to 5.0GHz) 16GB DDR3 2133MHz DIMM RAM, Nvidia EVGA GTX 750 ti 2GB GDDR5, 240GB OCZ Trion 100 SSD and 1TB 7200RPM SATA III Hard Disk for storage.

You have more then enough ram here. Why not just run it on your main computer?

It will all depend on how many people will be connecting to the server, if it's only a couple it should be fine, after 3 or 4 people you will need faster upload speed + more ram for the server.

Since minecraft has been updated (quite awhile ago now) to take advantage of multicore cpu's i would go with the Athlon x2, even then it might struggle with more people.

Okay, also do you recommend Windows XP or Linux (which distro)?

Would it be better performance-wise for an MC server? Also, which Linux distribution do you recommend for this type of thing?

I have an extra gig of RAM (2x 512M). If I use Linux 64-bit (The processor of that computer has a 64-bit architecture) I should be able to use 5GB. Right?

ubuntu is a good one. And yes/no. I don't know what the resource draw of the 64 bit operating system will be, but from my experience with windows 10 it's at least 2gb going to the operating system. But thats windows and their fancy tiles etc. i'd imagine ubuntu in the realm of at least 1.5gb as unuseable. Also, ddr2 ram isn't great for any modern game. You need at least ddr3, and at that 8gb if you want to run a server. Another thing, you don't want to mix and match ram. Having two 512mb sticks of ddr2 with 2 x1 gb sticks and say ones kingston the other corsair, you're gonna have a bad time. Sure the system would try and fix the mis matched cl timings etc. but it'll cause a lot more problems than it's worth.

You can make a server with your current gear, dont expect to have a ton of people on it.

Alright, can I still try the RAM both ways, just to see which works better?

That'd probably work. How many players do you think I could get?

I'll also be running shaders with optifine on my client.
