All you need is Ccleaner for regular removal of temp & junk files - - don't get obsessive about it by installing any of those snake oil remedies.

Oh, and leave any registry cleaners alone.

I agree!!!

CCleaner for the misc. junk... and I use Superantispyware to get rid of my tracking cookies... When I was a newbie, I used to mess around with those registry cleaners and I've had nothing but problems with them. For example, once when I used one... every single shortcut in my computer became messed up. When I clicked on something to launch.. a different program would open. Another time after using one of those cleaners.. I didn't notice any problems until when I tried to install a program. It would just hang for 20-30 min. during the install... I mean tiny programs like around 20mb in size... and that UNDO function didn't do squat to reverse the damage.

I now follow a simple rule I once read a few years ago. Windows will become corrupt over time... no matter what you do to it. So to keep it running smoothly... just perform a fresh new clean install every six months. Since I started doing that.. I never had problems again.
