Hi guys, long time viewer of this forum but first time poster
Pc gamer here
Was enjoying my life with a intel core 2 duo 2.0ghz then my fraps started to give huge frame rate lag, decided to upgrade to an intel quad core 2.4ghz so I can multi run programs easier.
So heres what happened:
Cpu arrived and replaced duo to quad, intel stock heatsink push pins kept breaking when pushing in to mobo, broke all 4 pins, no worry, have a spare stock fan,
Tried 2nd stock fan and broke all push pins again, have no idea why, i know how to insert them but still just bad luck i guess
Decide no more fans left, what do?
Took apart my brothers pc, he has a coolmaster heatsink and back mobo brace, decide to take it,
Applied it to mine with no problems. ( its his spare pc that he doesnt use anymore, but all parts are still working)
Turn on pc everything normal, check system properties and see if cpu is what it is, quad core recognized, suddenly windows is installing cpu quad core driver updates???? Restart now to finish.
Restart and pc is destroyed, I press power Button but the heatsink fan moves like half a sec then stops
The psu doesnt move at all no beeps on mobo and my mobo does not have lights
Tried reconnect all hardware and nothing, took brothers spare psu and still same, do paperclip test on both psus, everything fine

Installing driver updates then suddenly whole pc breaks (like they want me to pay for a new one or what)
Need help guys im really at a dead end now
Tried removing all but cpu ram psu still nothing
Tried diff ram diff slots diff psu

What do

mobo is an Asrock G31M-GS socket 775 mobo
PSU 1 is 450w
PSU 2 is 650W
both RAMs are 2GB DDR2
old CPU was intel duo core
new CPU is intel quad core
old heatsink was stock fan from intel
brothers heatsink was coolmaster metal screw in heatsink fan

i ordered 2 new intel stock fans and a new PSU will arrive by weekend but anything i can do now before then? i also ordered a bunch of thermal paste too, just incase i didnt put enough on the first time

all help appreciated

tried holding the power down 10sec then pressing it again once and the heatsink moves a fraction of a second and stops

Solution
Does it work on the original CPU? Dd you check for a BIOS upgrade before CPU swap? Issues with heatsinks may have damaged the CPU or the socket or motherboard.

think i had the same prob when i put my pc together 7 years ago
that update sounds fishy but did u let it reboot on its own or did u have to force it off?

dc=disconnect
dc power to psu hit the power button to drain completely till mobo light is off and then some
dc baby battery
dc ram
dc any externals
dc hard drive
dc cdrom drive
check wiring and back track anything u touched
go for a smoke
put it together and make sure connections are made properly
check the fan and hs make sure it spins and hs is sitting properly
if u have multiple hard drives or cdrom just connect the one with os and one cdrom
put baby battery back
plug the power
think about the good ol days back in 1999 then hit that power button
done!

Hang the 9
I ran out of thermal paste but will get some later today and try the old cpu again, I dont know how to check bio upgrades so im a bit clueless about that

Just go to the vendor support page for your motherboard and look there for the BIOS. You don't need that much thermal paste on the CPU, just a thin layer that you get by spreading a dot of it around with your finger. "Pea size" dab is what is normally talked about, I tend to use a bit less, you want the top coated but not pasted on.

hi sorry for the late update, i tried the old CPU and the new CPU again with new thermal paste and 2 different PSUs and 2 different RAM sticks, getting the same situation, fan moves a split second and then nothing.

one thing to add that i remebered now was when i put the new CPU in and it booted up fine, then shut down, i switched it back on and it bootted again then shut down in 5mins, so i booted it again and it shut down in 1 min, then finally it never booted up again

starting to think the mobo is messed up but really if it was that then it wouldnt have loaded up the first time right?
i`ve tried diff RAM PSU CPU im running out of options and i fear the worst now

another update:
i used my brothers working mobo, its the same asrock model as mine, he also has a quad core but its 4mb cache instead of 8mb cach like the one i had, thats the only difference in the cpu of mine and his,
i took his out and put mine in and it failed with same problemn as my mobo
i tried his cpu and it worked perfectly, so i took his cpu out and tried it in my mobo and it failed too
so after this conclusion i can predict that
the mobo is broken, and since the mobo broke it also somehow fked up the cpu in the process, and while trying my old duo core cpu in the broken mobo also broke that cpu too, so this one mobo of mine broke two cpus and ruined my life

i have now gone and bought a new mobo GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L Rev. 1.0
can someone reccomend me a cpu? like the quad core but maybe a 4mb instead of a 8mb cache? since the 8mb worked but then suddenly broke down im not sure wha to get

thanks
ps: i`ll be looking to buy a new gpu also, probably a nvidia geforce gtx series gpu, not sure which would work with this mobo so any help is great, budget is £100

Why did you get that old motherboard if you also need a new CPU? The 775 socket is for Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo CPUs, if you need a new CPU and motherboard, was a bad idea, you just went back to 10 year old tech when you could have used this chance to get a modern system. You would need to get different RAM but at least you are not getting old parts.

Think over what you want to do here with your system, and post back. You can get a new motherboard, decent CPU and RAM for maybe $250, or maybe look for a used system, plenty of gamers upgrade parts and you can get a prior generation CPU or even current one for what that old motherboard and old CPU would cost. Or maybe even a full system for $250 including a decent video card and a good i3 or even an i5 CPU.

My thoughts for budget systems is get a used business tower with about a 300 watt power supply, will have decent specs and will be $200 or less for an i3 system or even i5 system, then $100 for a low-mid range video card with lower power draw like the nVidia 750 Ti, and you are done. Have a legal Windows on the box (since the business system comes with OEM Windows), good specs, cheap.

You can find local sellers for less very likely with similar systems.

in my area there is only one pc shop, its a local shop not a buisiness retailer, and they are dirty as hell, if you take somthing to get repaired it will come back 1 day later with 5 new problems, i dont trust them at all and one time i went there because it was the only pc shop, they charged me £8 for thermal paste (like 1 cm of paste in a tube) £8 is like $16, like wth, some bs
anyhow i decided to get that motherboard since it supports quad core CPU and i didnt know much about motherboards but it was rated 9.5/10 on a website i checked, thought it was pretty decent, also i spent quite alot of money on different parts so i had no chance to save up for a full system.

also i found out the motherboard was the problem, it blew up or something and when it did it took out the CPU and both sticks of RAM so i pretty much had to buy everything from scratch.
PC fully working now with new mobo RAM and new quad CPU, i can see the difference from duo core and quad its a pretty big change, the only last thing i need now is a decent GPU for gaming and recording, was eyeing up a nvidia geforce gtx 750 but not sure about it to be honest, because i see EVGA then GIGABYTE then ASUS versions of the SAME card but by diff brands, so its pretty confusing which is the right one to get.

That is exactly why you should have replaced the whole thing with a newer build instead of just getting the same old parts you had in your system before. Should have posted the issue you were having before you started ordering parts. It's like rebuilding a 10 year old car fully when it was totaled instead of just replacing it with a new one and paying the same amount. Any of those brands will be fine, you can pick any of them. See which one has the longest warranty. The Ti version of the 750 is pretty good. If you have a decent power supply you can get the Radeon R7 360 or 370, for the price they are faster.
