Is my laptop losing performance because of mismatched memory?

So im looking for some upgrades on my current laptop (Msi ge70 681 Apache pro) such as adding an msata drive and possibly upgrading memory, I didn't really think about upgrading memory as much until I thought about how there is two different sizes of ram, currently the laptop is at 12 go of ram, with one 8 gb stick and one 4gb stick, and I was wondering if laptops benefit the same with dual channel memory. Could I see a performance benefit if I buy a dual channel kit? Or would it not really make a difference. It wouldn't be too much of a loss on money since I could just sell the old sticks. But if there isn't that much of a performance increase then I might as well just buy a single 8gb stick to replace the 4gb if I ever wanted to upgrade.

Thanks

No, it shouldn't affect the performance, as long as Windows says that you have about 12GB of useable memory. If that is so, then I recommend keeping it the way it is. If you ever notice that you need more RAM because all of your RAM is getting used constantly, then go ahead and upgrade the 4GB to 8GB, or even 16GB, or both to 16GB, etc. Keep in mind that how much you can upgrade to is limited by how much your hardware can support.

So double channel operation won't make a difference compared to single channel?

I don't think so. Just make sure that Windows says that it has about 12GB of usable memory.
