Leaving audio quality aside, if we were to assume that you're going with Windows 10 for your system you're going to run into issues with the onboard Realtek audio solution whereby the audio is either non functional or simply gone bonkers. With that issue in mind going for an aftermarket sound card will alleviate the issue and in the process provided a somewhat refined audio experience.

If we were to assume you're sticking to the older OS's like Windows 7 or 8/8.1 you will yet experience a slight crackle or pop or even static(if you're home's grounding isn't on par)primarily due to the fact that the motherboard is a noisy environment with power practically being delivered through the entire motherboard's PCB. When moving to a dedicated sound card you avoid that noise(somewhat) and have add on feature's like improved circuitry and on some cards the option to swap out the OP AMP's.

What sort of an audio equipment are you thinking of pairing your sound card with?
