I am currently running a gygabyte z97x-UD3H with 980 sli hooked up to a sony bravia xbr850c 4k tv with an hdmi cable. From the tv I have an optical cable (my receiver is not 4k compatible) going to a 5.1 pioneer vsx 520 receiver, which is hooked up to polk speakers. My question is, would I get much of an upgrade in sound quality if I added a sound card to my motherboard?

Solution
Hello... Basically the Info your sending is Digital pre-recorded Data... and the Receiver is using the DAC's in it to your Speakers... You are just using the MB Sound/optical Chip as a Communications link and your GPU is doing the same with your HDMI cable.

If you are using the DACs on the MB for analog/speaker outputs, then a different Soundcard will give you different chip options here.

Your Receiver, or Speakers or adding a Equalizer Would improve your Sound.

This is right on the money. You're not even using the sound processing on your motherboard now.
