Here is a nightmare PC story:
I spent more than a month with a hardware update of a PC. I had tons of compatibility issues etc. finally, I had a working PC, and was happy with it...I was so busy with work that I didn't have the chance to close the case. Today I had a glass of water accidentally spilled and a very small portion of it hit the graphics card and the bottom part of the case. After few seconds I got a graphics card stopped responding message followed by graphics card recovered from an error. I tried to shut down Windows normally, but it wouldn't, so I unplugged the machine...I cleaned of the water where I saw, but there was really very few drops. Also noticed a drop on the motherboard. Turned back on, but no response...then after 30 secs or so the PC started on its own but nothing on the monitor and also no beeping sign of boot. I unplugged the machine, and after a minute or so I plugged it and without hitting the start button, it started on its own! But again no boot. I waited for about half minute and it shut itself off...all my subsequent attempts to turn it on failed. When its plugged the green light on the motherboard is always on...but no other sign of life. I gave up, I unplugged the PC and left for home...
What should I do next? What is my chance to revive this thing? I spent so much time to upgrade this PC that it kills me to see it dead...

Solution
Its hard to say, the GPU could be preventing the boot, but it also could be the motherboard.
If you had to replace it you would need a new OS (unless you have the retail install media) and reinstall your programs. The data would still be there however.

Given the 8mb of DDR2, maybe its a sign you need to upgrade.
Well it might have been fine had you left it to dry, but attempting to power it back up probably fried some components.
Given your description I would test the graphics card in a different system to see if its still working (im going with not) and the motherboard is also likely damaged.

Gam3r01...thanks. this was a 8 year old mobo...I had to start with a hack-flash the bios for aschi...I added 8mb of ddr2 ram, etc etc...I can get a new gpu. But what do you think about saving the mobo? That's my only chance to use the OS and all the program set up etc. I don't think I can hook my ssd to another PC and start from where I left off..based on my description of powering on and off the system do you think the mobo can be revived? Does the gpu damage alone explain the power and boot issues??

Well..I only had 2gb before the upgrade! If only you knew the amount of work that went into this. I finally had Windows 7 with all the updates and the OS was starting in 9 seconds. It was more than what I needed...I hope it is the gpu causing all the issues. Should I remove the mobo clean with alcohol or what not? Is there a way to check th mobo for errors? Many thanks...

glad to report that my PC survived the accident with zero damage.
I guess I am very lucky, but I was also unlucky the way water found its way inside that case!
Lesson learned: shut down the system ASAP and be patient....Thanks to all!
