Can a damaged motherboard hurt my power supply?

Okay so this is the situation i am in, and not sure whats the best thing to do. About 2 weeks ago i installed a new CPU heatsink into my desktop PC requiring me to remove my motherboard from my case. All went well until i went to power on my PC again for the first time. Made a funny buzzing like noise for about a second before i quickly killed the power to it. All i know that happened is that my power supply has died.

Sent it into Corsair for RMA. Got my replacement, but i am very nervous about hooking it up again as i find it very strange my PSU decided to die at this moment after handling my motherboard. I have no idea if my motherboard or any other components have really been damaged at all. I am just scared if i do hook it up the same thing may happen. I know some will say i am being overly cautious its just i put alot of money into my pc, and dont want to have to fish out more money.

So my question to anyone that can offer me some advice or recommendations is if my motherboard is truly damaged can it cause my power supply to suddenly die? Can a damaged motherboard hurt any other components? If you were in my situation what would you do?
I will greatly appreciate any help. Thank you very much.
PC Specs. Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X UDH3 PSU: Corsair CX750M (almost 2 years old) CPU: Intel core i5 4690K GPU: GTX 970

Short answer, yes. Long answer, it would need to short your supply voltage line to its ground to cause any real damage. That will almost certainly not happen.

Can it damage the rest of your components? Much easier. I would not worry about your supply. I would worry about your CPU, memory, graphics card, and other devices connected via motherbaord.

I would remove all your expensive pieces - the GPU, your drives, etc. Just hook up cpu, display (to onboard gfx) and the psu. There should be a motherboard diagnostics in the BIOS. Worst case scenario you RMA the psu again and get a new MOBO. Best case is it was a bad coincidence.
