hello

i want to build a Windows 98 machine for old games. i would just use an emulator like VMware on my modern day PC... but that won't give me the full gaming experience. I want to be able to play games like GTA 3, sim city 3000. stuff like that from 1992-2004. do you guys have any suggestions for parts? should i go with an AMD Athlon or a pentium 4?

Solution
if you're hunting old parts like that, be careful...most of them are old and well used by now.

I'd go an Athlon (they were better in those days), 1 GB RAM, and a GeForce 5800GT. Its actually what I built for myself in 2005
So are you familiar with VirtualBox? It's free for personal use and has support (still "experimental" I believe) for 3D acceleration. I have played around with it with pretty good success once you give it plenty of VRAM and the Guest Addition drivers have been installed. I'd be testing that before building an old rig myself. Or is mucking about with old hardware part of the charm for you?
