I replaced my old toshiba mk5065gsx with toshiba mq01abf050

My new HDD is having problems installing windows and comes up with corrupt partitions. I assume this is because I tried installing windows 7 before i later tried to install windows 10.

I started running CHKDSK last night and it appears to be replacing ALOT of bad clusters, (currently file 46500 of 192000 on stage 4 and it ran all night while i was asleep)

So my question is, will CHKDSK automatically repair this? Or will I have to fix this another way?

My other question is. How do i delete everything on my drive and start from scratch with my windows 10, and would this fix the issue

Solution
Chkdsk will isolate the bad sectors making them unusable and you can format the HDD or even Low Level Format it to remove all corrupt data in it, but the point is, a new HDD should not have a single bad sector more the less a single cluster so it would be wise to have it replaced now while it's brand new.

Before anything else, I'd check the hdd data and power connections to discard a bad one. And it's a fact bad PSUs can damage hardware so make sure it's not the cause.

So is this HDD useless? I had old corrupt hard drive with "smart failure" i made a USB copy of windows 10 on old HDD and installed new hard drive.

I also tried to install windows 7 from my old recovery CD's which could have cause my new drive to become corrupt? the setup never finished but the installation did. I also did this before ever trying to install windows 10

What steps do i do after CHKDSK to get it to format.

Also this is a laptop, so checking psu and connectors is a issue

On a laptop, just check the power adapter connections and don't use it on battery alone till you have solved the issue.

You mentioned ALOT of bad clusters (sector clusters) meaning it has alot of bad sectors and this should not be happening on a new hdd, it can take years before having the first bad sector, so this is not normal and you should have the HDD replaced.

A failed Windows installations can only leave files behind so it's not a cause for HDD corruption but the cause of failed installations may be due to defective HDD.

If you first want to clear all dubts, format the HDD completely from the Windows installer... follow this installation guide:

How to Clean Install Windows 10

After installing Windows and an antivirus, download Hard Disk Sentinel to know more accurately what condition the HDD is in.

LOl.. the chkdsk scan is still going on?... so what size is it?... at what # stage is it now at?

That may be a sign that the scan has stopped running which should not happen on a new hard drive. So, it's better to stop it and format the drive in quick format which depending on the HDD size should take from seconds to minutes... a full format should take much longer.. up to hours if it's large, but full format is not necessary at this time since the HDD is rather new and there isn't much data in it.

If a format goes on flawlessly, then do a chkdsk scan... depending on the disk surface condition and disk size, it should take from minutes to hours. For example a HDD with no bad sectors can get done in a few minutes, with bad sectors it can take hours but not days. If it does, that's another bad sign.

So, start the chkdsk and if it takes half day and it's at stage 4-5 wait a few more hours... stages 4 and 5 usually take longer so wait, or keeps us posted on chkdsk scan duration per stage.

Yes the repair tool does work somethimes. For me at least, it worked on a 10,000 RPM hard drive.

So i just formatted the drive because chkdsk was taking too long.

As soon as i reformatted i started getting the smart drive failure warning at bootup that my old HDD was getting.

Anyways it formatted into RAW format, not sure what to do to get it it NTFS. But it won't let me run chk dsk or attempt to install windows on the RAW drive. I may just take it into a computer shop but i really don't want to pay them as i'm just planning to sell this laptop after i get it working again.

Have you checked the HDD connections specially the data connection?... I would replace it before anything else. It may be the cause the drive and the older drive are having trouble.

EDIT: Forgot it's a laptop...
