Hi, I currently have multiple Blu-ray drives on multiple PC's and none of which can recognize a 4K Blu-ray disc... Yes they are BDXL and support 100 and 128gb Blu-ray discs. I was wondering if anyone has got this to work or if PC's just cannot play them yet.

I have a i5 skylake, GTX970, 8gb memory.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with the above poster. The firmware needs to be updated from the manufacturer to allow compressed 4k disks to be read. Normal 4 layer blu-ray disks that use BDXL drives won't be able to read a pressed 4 layer disk. Most likely because of licensing, they won't release the firmware to let these work with our current drives. We'll have to buy new internal drives that have the licensing for them. It's gay but that's our only answer. The drives can't physically read the disks.

Im currently using PowerDVD 15 ultra the newest one.
My disc drives all spin up like they are searching for the disc but then stop.. windows will not even show it as having a disc inserted into the drives.

I can put in any other blu-ray or 3D blu-ray and they work fine the only disc they wont see is the 4K Ultra HD

This the part im getting confused on i cant find much info but it acts as if there is no disc windows included.

Bluray playback sucks on PCs. The software is atrocious.
I use my bluray drive to rip the bluray (using makemkv - its free) and play the mkv file using MPC or VLC (or on a media player via USB drive on the TV or just use the disc in a standalone player)

I thought i would let everyone know that wants to know. It as of right now is NOT possible to watch 4k Blu-ray disc on the PC. There are currently NO Blu-rays drives for PC that can detect a 4k Blu-ray. The BDXL ones do not work either. I finally found a site that was talking about it. I also tried 3 different BDXL drives myself.

The newer LG BDXL drives can read them (make sure to get one with an initial manufacture date 2015 or later). Although there is a lack of software to play them currently due to the DRM on the discs. HDCP 2.2 is going to be a hassle to go through via software. We will have to see if the first instances of 4k BD viewing software will allow viewing through graphics devices and displays with only HDCP 1.4 or if you will have to have a Skylake processor for integrated graphics or a newer GPU that has HDCP 2.2 (like the upcoming NVidia GTX 1080 and 1070 as well as AMD's new GPU's yet to be announced).

It is a waiting game, I doubt anyone is cracking at from a homebrew level. We will just have to wait as Cyberlink is working with the UHD BD Association on UHD BD software.

Till now, there are mainly two ways to enjoy 4K videos: 4K external media player device and 4K media player software installed on computer. Several professional 4K player devices can play 4K videos, like Sony/LG 4K Ultra HD Media Player. 4K TVs such as Samsung UN65HU9000, have been invented. But they are all sort of expensive. There are also many computers which support 4K playing, especially after the release of Mac OS X 10.9.3(compatible with limited computer types). Now more and more Windows and Mac computers supports 4K playback with the help of 4K media player software In terms of price, watching 4K movies on computer seems to be a good choice. Then which 4K player software can support 4K video playback perfectly? UFUWare Blu ray Player is a good choice to play 4k blu ray disc movie on Windows pc.

I don't have a solution to this problem but it seems the status quo is that it can't be done. HOW then, are we seeing Bluray RIPS of 4k movies on torrent sites????

So i emailed Cyberlink and this is what they had to say

PowerDVD 16 doesn’t support UltraHD Blu-ray (UHD-BD) disc playback yet. The requirements for PCs to play UHD-BD discs is much greater than for CE players, and currently CyberLink is still developing it for the PC ecosystem.

To support UltraHD Blu-ray movie disc playback on the PC, several new technologies are required. These new technologies need to be incorporated into the software, optical drives (ODD), CPUs, and graphics processors, and are not all available on the market yet. CyberLink is dedicated to supporting UHD-BD and we’re working closely with our partners (ODD, CPU and graphics processor manufacturers) to deliver a solution.

Although PowerDVD 16 doesn’t support Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback. You can still enjoy 4K HEVC UltraHD video by PowerDVD 16.

Ok so I don't think anyone read my answer... sigh.

This is the deal, like DiabeticMadman has pointed out from what Cyberlink has said.

It's a waiting game for the software part of things to be added. Also displays might need to be capable of HDCP 2.2.

UHD BD's require HDCP 2.2 authentication and it's a fairly sophisticated encryption. The current way to break it on UHD players is through a 2.2 to 1.4 converter but you lose the ability for HDR.

Any specific model numbers? I'm looking for an external drive.

EDIT: I can say that my ASUS SBC-06D2X-U will not read the discs even though the drive supports BDXL up to 128GB.

My drive opens them fine and I can navigate the file structure and click on the m2ts files in the streams folder just fine. Obviously they won't play as they are encrypted, but the drive recognizes it and navigates it fine. I tested just now with batman vs superman 4k to re-verify.

The drive I bought I bought specifically because it was said to support 4k, but unfortunately I don't think anyone is really working on the encryption yet.

The drive is LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA 16x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter and I picked it up off of amazon.

I received a reply from Leawo and they said the latest version of Leawo Blu Ray player supports UHD Blu ray playback. But I don't believe that. Can you please test this for me? I don't own a UHD Blu Ray yet. Thanks.

Hi, I have been looking myself for a player, I recently got the LG WH14NS40 BDXL drive (which was manufactured in March 2016) and a 4k monitor. I got Batman Vs Superman UHD which the drive will read the file system but not play yet. The closest i have come is with MPC-HC with madVR installed, it seems to be playing something but it has no picture or sound.

The Leawo Blu Ray Player software you mentioned sees the disc, looks like it may start then gives me an Error -73 message. Admittedly this was my first try, I shall have another go to see if i have any better results.

A UHD disk is a version 2 disk (three layer with reduced mark length) which BDXL and BD-R Version 3 drives can read. UHD blu-ray media/Disk apparently has a header which puts the drive in a UHD mode the UHD player has to support. Reading the BDA and Mount Fuji book 9 differences, registers in the drive are used differently in UHD and HD modes which Player software has to follow. This keeps a HD player from being able to read the disk or media on a UHD disk and the reverse. A PC drive needs a BDA licence and the manufacturer must support a white page server and a Key server for pairing on the USB and eSATA bus. Likely this requires HDCP 2.2 encryption and complying with new Trusted Platform Module 2.0 standard for securely fetching Keys; Older drives can not support this.

Embedded/Game Consoles did not require a licence for pairing over the USB, I do not know if this is still true, White list server or key server, it still has to follow the other requirement to have a UHD and HD mode triggered by a header read in the normal way. This may or may not just require a firmware update.

I believe any drive newer than 2011 can read a BDXL disk which means with firmware update the PS4 drives should be able to read a 66 and 99 GB disk. Provisions are made for a game disk to have it's own DRM and support BDA authorized disks that can not be used for UHD Blu-ray. When games are released for a new PS4 4K Game capable console those disks would have to be readable on older PS4s.

Well, I think the 4K technology for Blu-rays on computers is behind that for TVs - no 4K UltraHD Blu-ray players yet for computers. One must own not only a 4K capable Blu-ray player but a TV or monitor that can display 4K images. For a better understanding of 4K Blu-ray check out this link:

http://4k.com/4k-blu-ray-ultimate-guide-everything-you-need-to-know-discs-hdr-movies-player-more/

Here's a partial quote from the body of the article:

"Unfortunately, normal HD Blu-ray players simply won’t play a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc. Fundamentally, 4K UHD Blu-ray is a separate media from normal HD Blu-ray and the method by which these new discs execute in a compatible media player is unworkable in any ordinary HD BD player you’ll likely see. The massive storage needs and transfer speeds of 4K discs are beyond the practical abilities of HD players so having one of the new 4K Blu-ray players on the market is an absolute must."
