Windows 10 going corrupt every 3-4 months. Need help troubleshooting...

Hey folks,

So around August of this past year, I upgraded to a Samsung 850 PRO 512GB SSD, as well as moving from Windows 8.1 to a clean install of Windows 10 Pro. The previous SSD I used was a Crucial M500 I believe that worked fine from February 2014 until it was replaced. The new drive and OS worked great for several months...but suddenly around Christmas of last year, my OS suddenly went corrupt. I thought it may have been my overclock suddenly becoming unstable, so I reset my BIOS and went back to stock specs and reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch. Now all of a sudden, the OS is once again corrupt. Here are exactly the same symptoms that crop up whenever this happens:

1. Windows will freeze completely and need a cold reboot in order to work again. Before this, certain programs will start crashing, like Chrome.

2. After a cold reboot, most of the OS is unusable. The start menu won't work, and trying to open certain programs or images will yield a registry error or program not found error.

3. Attempting to repair the OS in any way is impossible. I tried using SFC, DISM, Startup Repair, Check Disk, etc. with no luck. Most of the time SFC and DISM don't even run. Check Disk will either get stuck towards the end or cause the system to crash with the "NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM" bluescreen. Troubleshooting things in Safe Mode didn't make a difference either.

4. At least once after everything has gone to hell already, usually the first or second reboot gives a "no boot device found" message and the SSD doesn't show up in the BIOS at all. Power cycling the entire system brings the SSD back again, but usually by this point the OS will crash immediately with the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" bluescreen at boot, or it will load extremely slowly into a half-working OS that will eventually crash.

The really odd thing is that while it might be easy to point to the SSD as the culprit, it shows NO error or issues in Samsung Magician, SSDLifePro, or Acronis Drive Monitor. Once the drive is reformatted and a fresh install of Windows is back on it, it works fine...it's just after a few months everything all of a sudden goes to hell with no warning signs. Speeds are what they should be and it shows no signs of problems until months later.

I've tested my RAM with MemTest for about 10+ hours and the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool with no issues either. I'm wondering at this point if it could be something else, such as a bad SATA controller, or if it really is just the SSD. I also attempted to run Check Disk and DISM on the drive hooked up externally to my laptop, but it would either fail or get stuck at 98% on Check Disk. Again, I did have an older Crucial SSD that worked fine for about a year and a half in there before...albeit, with Windows 8.1.

If anyone could possibly help me troubleshoot this further I'd really appreciate it. I would just buy a new SSD to see if that's the issue, but if it's not that then it's $150 down the drain. Before I go that route, I want to be certain it is indeed the SSD that's the problem, as I've heard and read nothing but good things about the Samsung 850 PRO series.

Here are my system specs:
- Intel Core i7 4770k (Stock)
- 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600
- Gigabyte Z87-UD4H Motherboard
- EVGA GeForce GTX780 3GB Video Card
- Samsung 850 PRO 512GB SATA3 SSD
- 650W Silverstone Strider PSU

Thanks!

Very odd, but your description does seem to point to an SSD problem. Perhaps some issues in some NAND cells that after re-written to after a format caused problems after awhile. I'm using a 950 Pro NVMe, 2 850 PROs and an 850 EVO all in Windows 10 systems and haven't seen what your describing. Also, you mentioned the scan fails when testing on your laptop. Otherwise, I'd suspect OC but your running stock and Memtest is clean. Is there a firmware update available for your drive?

Ever find a solution? I have the same EXACT problem. I suspect it might be my motherboard (my HD Audio no longer works) but none of this makes sense. What hardware issue can be fixed by reinstalling Windows? I originally suspected my SSD (120GB OCZ Vertex 3) also, so I bought a new SSD (1TB Mushkin Reactor), but I can't even access the new SSD without instantly freezing my system. Could it be faulty SATA hardware? Reinstalling Windows 10 every 3 months is a real pain. I've considered buying a new motherboard, but I really want to wait until the next gen of VR comes out before upgrading.

My specs (none of my hardware matches yours):
ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen 3
Intel Core i7 2700K (overclocked to 4.4GHz)
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws
Gigabyte GeForce 980Ti Windforce
120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
1TB Mushkin Reactor SSD
2 x 3TB Seagate HHD
Oculus Rift
