Laptop shuts down after plugging in external hard drive

My friend's laptop shuts down when she plugs in her external hd

laptop: asus t100taf
-win 8.1
-intel atom
-2gb ram
-power supply: 5v 2a, 10w
-1 usb 2.0 port

external hd: 1tb seagate

she asked me for help and asked her to plugged the charger first into the laptop before plugging in the hd, 'cause i thought it's some power failure. (was just guessing as this never happened to me ever since)

obviously it failed. need help. thanks in advance

Just try the hub method. Things get old and break down, just because it was working doesn't mean it works now

the laptop was able to handle the hd before. it doesn't shut down or anything. this just happened recently, and we don't really know why
