Why is my CPU cooler turning off while playing games

Recently I have upgraded from a GTX 660 to a new ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 and around a week later after suffering from framerate dropping (100 fps to around 20)and blackouts, I have noticed that the CPU temperature hits over 100% and checked the CPU cooler to see it shuts off while the GPU coolers become faster when playing demanding games like The Division, After closing the game the cooler restores itself to usual and the CPU cools back down to around 40 degress celsuis. What is the cause of this problem and how can it be solved?

Overheating. Maybe the new graphics card is faltering.

Check that your PSU is up to the power demands of the new graphics card.

Make sure all cooling fans are properly connected and powered.

Look for air flow obstruction in and out of the case.
