So I a have a quite old pc, it has a hdd with Windows 10 (64 bit) and other stuff in it (games, movies, etc.). I am going to build a new pc, so my question is, can I remove the hdd on my old pc and put it on the new one and keep windows 10 and the other stuff in it or I have to wipe the hdd to put it on my new pc?

Solution
It might work and boot Windows on your new system, but I doubt it. Even if it does, it may still have problems because drivers and other things won't be the same. It's better to back up any important data, format it, and do a clean install.

You can keep it..unless the version of Windows the was installed is an OEM version, then I dont know. If you don't care about your files I would use the Windows disc and install it again. If you do care about your files then move the HDD over. I didn't care about the files since mostly games so I reinstalled my Windows 8.1 onto it once I brought it over.

Carrizosa - - Please follow up on this thread and let us know how it goes with that drive whenever you try it - - does it boot into Windows 10 okay or not on your new PC - - it will be of great help to others who read this thread looking for answers - - not to mention helping to broaden our own knowledge on such a frequently argued-over topic.

Oh, and welcome to THF! :)

I dont remember if it is an OEM version (I would need to look for the disk), but what I do care is about media files(music, movies, etc.), I guess I would just back up that stuff, would see what happens once I get my pc.

Hi, so about the swap of my hdd, surprisingly it worked, everything stayed the same as in my old pc ( I don´t know if I was lucky or maybe it just works like that).
