can i use an old hdd with a new computer with an old operating system?

so with my new build i bought a 128gb ssd, obviously 128gbs isn't going to hold a lot so i was wondering if i could use my old hdd from my previous pc(which has windows vista installed in it) with my new pc( which has windows 8.1) could this be possible or would i have issues? i want to use the old hdd as storage only not to boot off.

That should work no problem. Just install it and and erase everything on it you don't want to keep.

As long as the drive is SATA then you should be able to use it in your new system without any fuss. If it happens to be an older IDE type drive then you could need a IDE controller to be able to use it.
