Computer Problems thinking about upgrading

So I currently have
MOBO: EVGA p67 SLI
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge Quad-Core 3.3GHz
GPU: GTX 970
RAM: 8gb of DDR3

So just today my computer started getting an error code saying there is something wrong with my CPU. I looked at it and didn't see anything wrong with it. So now I have to decide if its my CPU or my motherboard. So I am trying to decide what I should do. Even if it is the motherboard and I could keep the CPU is it worth it to buy an old motherboard with the chance that it really it just the CPU? I could use some advice and any upgrades for these parts I'm also going to upgrade my Case and power supply if I decide to upgrade which is why I didn't post them here.

Solution

Generally you would use a PSU tester or a multi-meter.

I am getting error 58 which says CPU self test failed or possible CPU cache error. I can't even get my monitor to show anything. I though it was my GPU but I tried my old one and it fixed nothing so I'm stumped

I know this sounds simplistic, but, have you tried replacing the CMOS battery? On a recent legacy build, I was getting CPU errors until I replaced the battery. Should be a CR2032 and it's worth a try.

Yea my psu is fine

It is worth getting another motherboard as that CPU is still very strong, but without testing the CPU in another compatible motherboard, there is no telling if the issue is the motherboard or the CPU itself.

If you would rather upgrade then it comes down to the budget for the motherboard, CPU and RAM, since the upgrade that would be worthwhile would use DDR4. i.e. i5-6600(k, if overclocking is wanted). While Haswell is still available, it is on a dead socket and for a full upgrade or new build, it's a good idea to go with something that has an upgrade path.

Yea thanks I think I am going to just upgrade I do like the CPU but its not worth buying a new motherboard and it actually being the CPU then I have a motherboard that is old still I would rather just spend the money and be safe
