Overclocking the Intel Core i5 650 with the stock cooler... is it possible?

I have been recently upgrading my PC to find its maximum potential, for it is beginning to show its age as a 6 year old Gateway DX4840. It has an Intel Core i5 650, cooled by a stock CPU cooler. As far as I know, my PSU is 500 watts. Is it possible to overclock my CPU with the stock CPU cooler and PSU?

Yes...a mild OC. I'd re-apply the thermal paste first.

The question is if Gateway's motherboard will let you do that (probably not).

Not sure...depends on the BIOS. OEM Vendors usually lock that stuff out. If you have the settings to do so, maybe a mild 4-500 MHz for starters.
