Hi!
I own an old computer (Intel Q6600 - 8 gig RAM- SSD drive) and my MB (Asus P5K-SE EPU) burnt. I don´t plan on buying a whole new setup, and change memory, cpu and MB. I´ll only buy an used MB (775 cpu slot), as my computer is pretty fast to my uses. The most CPU intensive I use is Photoshop, and Solidworks.

But I plan to upgrade the usability of the MB. So I checked that there´s over ebay some cheap PCI-E adapters to add USB type 3.1, offering 10gbit speeds. But they require at least one PCI-E 4x slot free. The PCI-E 1x slot won´t give full speed. My doubt is:

If I find an used 775-MB with 2 PCI express x16 slots (those intended to do a SLI setup), and use one slot with a graphics card, can I use the other x16 slot with these PCI-E add-on boards, that require at least PCI-e 4x?

Or these 2 PCI-E 16x are only suited for Video adapters?

If so, anyone can recommend a good old 775 MB, that allows 8gigs RAM and has 2 x16 PCI-E slots? I live in Brazil, so I will most find it over ebay... I´m now using a spare board, that only allows 4 gigs RAM..

Thanks for reading!

Unless you have storage devices that have full 3.1 capability it won't be of much use.
You can put anything PCIe x1 and PCIe x4 in PCIe x16 slot, it's not only for GPUs.
For MB, just look for full ATX format (with newer chipset) as it will have more PCIe slots.
MBs with those sockets are out of production for a while now sou you'll have to scour E-bay to find one.

What are you planning to spend? You may be able to find a barebones system with newer CPU and Memory that has the USB 3.1 built-in. Just look before you commit to the older hardware. You may find you can get something better for a comparable price but newer CPU and RAM with better performance than you have with something similar to your Q6600 was very robust processor in its day. I am not saying scrap it just look at your options.

I have had to make things work due to equipment and OS needs and spent far more buying outdated motherboards than newer hardware.
