what are the odds of incompatible with buying another 2x 4gb sticks of memory?

If they are of the same series then the chances for them not being compatible are 5% at best, probably less. So generally speaking it should work in most cases, even with different series it should still work in most cases. However just to be safe, you might consider buying memory with cashback option.

odds of being totally incompatible - very less. odds of giving a flawless experience- very less. Expect some random crashes related to memory once in months and sometimes 1 2 memory modules not detecting randomly but working fine on re plugging or reboot. Overall not worth the hassle

If they are the exactly the same (brand/model/size) - extremely small. I've added identical RAM to systems for years without issue. I've even added RAM that was a different brand but had the same specs (Speed, CAS latency, voltage, size) without a problem.

darn, ill have to think about it. but i can always return them if their not working properly. thanks guys

If you decide to try it report back. I'd be interested to know if you had any issue adding RAM with the same brand, model and specs. Again, I never have in 15 years of upgrading PCs.
