Choosing between Corsair H80 and H110i for cooling an Intel i7-6700k

Good day to all,

As of this moment in time, I am building a new computer with the following (basic) configuration, already mentioned partially and as a preliminary thought elsewhere, here:
- Motherboard Asus Z170 Pro
- CPU Intel i7-6700k
- RAM G.Skill TridentZ, 32GB, 3200 MHz F4-3200C16Q-32GTZ
- GPU XFX R9 380 4GB, DD (R9-380P-4DF5)
- PSU Corsair HX1050
- System Disc(s) 2 x Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD MZ-75E120B/AM in RAID 0 mode

As I am stating in the title of this thread, I have in my possesssion two Corsair water cooling systems, the older H80 and the newer H110i. I intend to do a moderate overclocking of the system, therefore I assume that the use of water cooling is a "must".

One of these two Corsair coolers will anyway be used for this purpose. The remaining Corsair cooler will be used on another computer, with an Intel Xeon X5492 CPU, which is also under construction.

The question:

Are both of them somehow appropriate to cool the i7 at an adequate level under a moderate overclocking, say something like 4.5 GHz?

The reason I am asking this is to come to the correct decision what would be the most appropriate computer case, to house the system. Right now, I also have in my possession two Lian Li cases, coming from the past, but still in great shape and certainly good enough to accept the components of the new PC. One is the Lian Li A-71B (black) case and the other is the Lian Li PC-A10A (silver) case. In pure terms of aesthetic, I prefer the PC-A10A case, but this will hardly accept or may not accept at all the H110i. Thus, the question of the choice between the H80 and the H110i.

Your input will be higly appreciated.

A good quality air cooler can be just as effective as water cooling, therefore water cooling isn't a must but you would still have to have quality aftermarket air cooling. Secondly the i7 6700K is going to run hot while overclocked and a 4.5Ghz overclock isn't moderate for that CPU, its near the top most get out of a 6700K. There are some examples of highly binned chips overclocking better, but on average most don't get much past 4.6 or 4.7Ghz, I would say the average maximum overclock is 4.6Ghz. With the heat that the i7 6700K is going to have at 4.5Ghz+ I would recommend using the larger H110i.

Here is a good guide and will illustrate why for 4.5Ghz you should be using the H110i:

Thanks a lot, mate for your immediate and useful reply. I am using the water cooling vs air cooling, since both Corsair coolers came to me in very low cost, It would be a shame not to use them.

However, the most important is that both can do the job, which frees my hands for the use of the case I intend to use.

no problem obviously the h80 is smaller but if i remember right its thicker and easier to fit in a case especially if you want push/pull

Yes, obviously i will have to experiment, during fitting the components in the case, before the final assembly, but it is useful to know that the H80 is adequate for cooling the i7-6700k.

Thank you, too, mate for your advice. I put the "4.5 GHz" value, probably too much exaggerating, but it came out as a first thought, certainly not much pondered.

I will have your advice in mind, during installation and tweaking of the system and I will certainly "climb" up the settings very carefully, until I get a stable and safely oveclocked system.

Thanks again.

i have 6600k overclocked but its hard to guess an idea of what temps you would get as mine is fully watercooled

and i dont bother stress testing it with prime95 as i think thats unrealistic compared to every day use

but if i run intel processor diagnostic tool after dropping it down to 4.5ghz i get 49c to 52c coolest core to hottest core

though the ambient temperature here is pretty cool at the moment
