Best but cheapest way to upgrade to intel from AMD

HEYY,
So I currently have a FX-6300 CPU, I want to overclock it a bit to 4GHz but I have been warned and told my current motherboard is no suited for overclocking as it does not have and VRM heat sinks.

The board is a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0.
If I were to upgrade the MOBO that's £40-70 for a new board

What is the cheapest but most effective way of upgrading to intel ? Skylake or haswell?

Haswell I would be able to re-use my 8GB 1600Mhz RAM and just get a new MOBO and CPU
Skylake I would need to buy new DDR4 Memory, MOBO and CPU

What way should I go ? I play games like CSGO and occasionally GTA V 720p LOW setting (GPU limits)

I occasionally render videos too but not that much, I am looking for a way to upgrade my motherboard to intel and put in something in it that is similar performance to the FX6300 for now and then upgrade the CPU in the future to an i5 so that I have the ability to upgrade when I have saved money.

ANyone got any ideas

Thanks :)

Tbh, i think for games like csgo the fx-6300 is pretty sufficient. What I think you need to do is upgrade your graphics card. If you get a better card you will have much better frames in csgo. I know this for a fact because I have the exact same motherboard and an fx-8350 cpu ( which doesn't get that many more frames than the fx-6300) paired with a gtx 970 and I can run csgo from 140-230ish fps. Plus you will be able to run csgo on higher graphics settings and it will look nicer.

You will also be able to run gta-5 on much better settings at 1080p if you upgrade your GPU. What GPU do you currently have?

I am curently using a 6770 as a fill in gap before i get a 950 or something similar, The reason I want to upgrade to intel is becasue even their i3 6300 is at the same performance as the 6300 and that just a duel core with hyperthreading vs a FX -6300= 6 core.

Intel seem to have way more upgrade options you have i3 and all their models, i 5and all their models and i7 with all their models. Eachone better that the other vs AMD with the FX like with only a hand full of CPUs

AMD
Four core processors
FX-4100
FX-4120
FX-4130
FX-4150
FX-4170

Six core processors
FX-6100
FX-6120
FX-6130
FX-6200

Eight core processors
FX-8100
FX-8120
FX-8140
FX-8150
FX-8170

This list of Intel Haswell CPUs

My point is intel have better single core perfoamce comapre to AMD , AMD focus more on multicore usage. If a lower end i3 6100 2xcores can do better than a FX-6300 with 6 cores then intel have the advantage. Image going through all the i3s and then the i5s and then moving to the i7s with RAW POWER!

I want to go intel, i don't see the point saying with the FX line up at the moment with nothing really being added until Zen comes out and that might need a new socket so either way i will have to get a new motherboard.

My question was not what are the reasons to say with my current FX 6300 but how to upgrade to intel for the same performance at not much expense. Thanks for the help though :D

It's not that I think this CPu is holding me back per se, its more about teh ability to upgrade in the future, FX is pretty much dead and nothigfn really being realsed other than Zen which may have a new socket. The i3 6100 CPU is £100 and is better than the FX 6300 then you have all the other i3 processors and the i5s and i7s.

The i3 6100 is only a duel core vs 6 cores on the FX 6300. I would like to upgrade to intel lol

You're gonna be extremely underwhelmed by the performance gains between the fx-6300 and a haswell or skylake i3. Especially when there's a massive bottleneck that isn't being caused by the CPU. Your computer is begging for a new GPU.

Okay what would you recommend ? i5 hawell or skylake ? I currently have DDR3 that i can use on haswell and that is a DDR3 platform so all I need is a new MOBO and i5 or do i go Skylake and buy and new motherboard, CPU and RAM ?

Skylake, sell all the old stuff (pretty easy to sell as a working combo). Might as well go to the newest platform and get the newest features if your upgrading.

I am on about upgrading my CPU, GPU and motherboard, I am currently unable to overclock my CPU as the LE the same as you have no VRM heatsinks . If i could overclock then I would just get a new GPU like a 950 or r9 something , maybe the 300 series. but knowing my board is not the best for overclocking or performance I fell like i need to upgrade it if i were to stay AMD , IF i went intel I could upgrade my CPU, GPU and motherboard. I don't want to spend good money on a new motherboard and GPU if I can't get anymore power out of my CPU due to no heatsinks

Are you on skylake with your 2500k ? or is that a haswell chip ? im thinking if a motherboard like MSI's Z97 gaming board pared with something from intel ! if I got a K processor then I can overclock that chip as the board has VRM heatsinks and supports OCing

My 2500k is sandybridge, had it since 2011, still going strong.

The z97 is only for haswell/devils canyon chips, youll want z170 for skylake. any of the z170 will do the job overclocking.

yes that is correct, I do know my tech mate, I just don't know what do do. If i say AMD then there are pretty much NO upgrade paths in the future. With intel I can upgrade in the future. that's what im getting at, not that the fx6300 is bad or doesnt meet my needs , simply the ability to upgrade in the future and not be suck with a semi dead chip later down the line

sounds like you just want to jump ship and join the Intel bandwagon lol. but don't think your alone, I've thought about switching myself as well... but truth is (in my case, maybe it's similar to yours?) money doesn't flow very 'swimingly' through my wallet lol if you know what I mean!! I'm actually glad AMD (and I think you'll find Intel too THUS the hoards of nerds still rocking Sandy Bridge....) has not INNOVATED in 5+ years, it's great! Gives even my poor-'arsed' wallet time to catch up! What I'm saying is regardless, by the time I'm looking to upgrade I'll be wanting something on a whole new platform anyway!! Why be stuck with PCIx2 when you can have PCIx4!! USB2 when you can open up the bandwidth on USB3.1!! mSATA and so on and so on, don't think about upgrading JUST your cpu in the future, upgrade YOUR WHOLE RIG. You can do that on either Intel or AMD, it doesn't matter when your tossing pretty much ALL the old stuff.

What I'm saying is SAVE up till you can comfortably buy a rig that can DEMOLISH any game you care about, and be happy with your purchase. None of this 'I want to upgrade so I can MAYBE BUT ONLY POSSIBLY IF I WIN THE LOTTO upgrade in the NEAR future... before Intel's next platform- or even Zen- brings it to it's knees.' Upgrade vertically (up and down) not horrizontally (left and right) do the latter and you're just wasting money. Instead buy your GFX card/ 144hz monitor/ mechanical gaming kb or something don't waste it just to join the Intel croud unless your actually upgrading the processor.

Real World answer: say you get that i3 6300 only BECAUSE you can someday upgrade to an i7, AMD comes out with Zen in a MONTH and Intel answers with SOMETHING (that invariably requires a whole new chip carriage or something) in 4 months will you, by than, have the 400$s to upgrade before then?? If not it pretty much doesn't really matter. Technology improvement pauses for NO-ONE. I'm just saying by the time I get that kind of doh the entire computer landscape has changed and THE WHOLE DARNED RIG has to be overhauled :/ just the way it goes bub.

I don't know
