Is Samsung Pro worth it for the double the price compared to Evo?

Hi all,

My Crucial M4 is about to die on me anytime, just got this info through CrystalDiskInfo.
it served me about 4 good years.

So, its time to upgrade.
I would like to get about half a terabyte this time. The disk is mainly for OS, but again, it does dump a lot of XBMC/Kodi Cache, and other programs that cannot be offloaded to another disk.

Hence i am in the market for a 450-500gb SSD disk.
The 512 Pro is for 219.00 dollars, and the 500 Evo is for 149, is it worth paying for Pro for its double the price of Evo?

Definately I understand that the pro is faster, but.. again, is it that noticeable?
Are the other disks that i could try comparable to evo for larger capacity for about the same price under 150 dollars?

Solution
The speed difference won't be noticeable, but you do get MLC in the Pro versus TLC in the EVO. MLC flash memory has longer durability, but usually most won't hit their SSDs enough to reach the TLC threshold.

I suggest a compromise for you - get the 480GB Sandisk Extreme Pro. It has MLC memory, and the price is in the middle of those Samsungs. You might even be able to find it on sale for 20 more than the EVO.

Whichever SSD you get, I would also recommend overprovisioning the SSD to around 20-25% unallocated space. That will also help to keep performance optimal as well as optimal endurance.

Sir, thats a great suggestion. I am adding SandDisk Extreme Pro to my bucket list as well, will place the order after a few more suggestions.
By the way, i couldnt find anything online any tutorial about overprovisioning the SSD's. How can i achieve this? Any tutorials or guide you have come accross?

No guide needed - just remember that whenever you create the main partition for the drive, leave 10-20% in unallocated free space. So for a 480GB SSD, you might make the main partition around 400-440GB (given that the mfg usually gives retail SSDs anywhere from 7-12% already). The SSD controller will use that unallocated automatically in its wear-leveling algorithms, thus keeping its performance and durability optimal.

Edit: Also, forgot to mention earlier that the Sandisk Extreme Pro has been rated basically at the same high performance level of the 850 Pro, so you won't lose anything performance-wise.

Thanks, i brought the samsung pro 850 512GB ssd drive.
I have left 71gb free, and installed windows on the remainder.
What next? this 71gb is unformatted partition, should i format it, or just let it be? Do i need to something else? is that all?

If I understand correctly, you made a partition with the unallocated space. Actually, you can just remove that unformatted partition (do that in Disk Manager), and then leave it be. That way you won't be tempted to use it later - out of sight, out of mind. The drive controller itself will use the unallocated space; you don't have to do anything.

Thats correct, when i was installing windows 7, i used diskpart and chisled out 71gb for over provisioning.

Now after installing windows, and samsung magician, I see this msg. "using a raw partition may damage your data.... see screenshot below. Anyways, i have click the set OP button.. and also turned off Disk defrag.

see below.

Looks good! Feel free to mark this as solved if you feel it fully answered your question.
