Why are RAM Stick Different? And the Differences?

Just a quick post, wondering why companies made different RAM stick (DDR2, DDR3, etc.)? do they make motherboards that can use different ones? Why would they make the slots in the middle-ish different in each generation, can't they just use the same slot and upgrade the RAM stick hardware? Details on the all the different types would be very appreciated as well.

As AMD and Intel develop new CPUs and the chipsets to give increase performance the CPU socket supported and the RAM sockets supported also change. If the change in the sockets are all really necessary can be up for debate. Usually you can still buy old type RAM with the new motherboards. For example you can buy some of the Skylake motherboards with DDR-3. I don't expect these to be popular but they do aid in the transition to the new platform.
