For general purpose use -- no games -- how would one of the new Intel NUC i5 Iris 540 Skylakes fare against a Lenovo minitower with an quad core i7-4770 Xeon E3 1200 Haswell?

Rationally, I suspect the i5's performance doesn't match up. But, the Lenovo is over-spec'd for my needs now (it wasn't when I bought it). And I'm tired of the thing sitting on my desk.

Well i5 with the graphics name doesn't give you the actual i5 model. There can be multiple models, using the same IGP.

That inxi software is not correctly giving you information. E3-1200v3 is not a graphics, but a CPU lineup. Most of the E3 Xeons don't even have graphics.

Iris is the name of the graphics, not the CPU. The 4770 and E3 1200's are two different CPU's altogether. Also there are some Xeons that are basically an i5, and others that are i7 based. Do you have links for these systems? An i5 is generally good enough, for most people. Only those that do a lot of multitasking, really need an i7, or i7 class Xeon.

The i7 is this: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/desktops/thinkcentre/m-series-towers/m93-m93p/#tab-tech_specs. Note that the CPU is an i7-4770.

inxi reports this: Graphics:
Card: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: Fedora X.org 118.1 driver: N/A
Resolution: 2560x1440@59.95hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Desktop
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 11.1.0 (git-525f3c2)

and this:

CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7-4770 (-HT-MCP-)

Yes, I do know Iris refers to the integrated graphcis.
