Can anyone help me put together a PC for around $500?

Hey my buddies dad wants a PC for around $500. I can build them, but I'm terrible at picking out all the parts. One of my friends is putting together a pcpartpicker list so I'll add that to the thread once he posts it to see what you guys think.

The PC would be an everyday PC. He would use it mainly for pictures, videos, spreadsheets, word. Some things he wanted was at least 1TB, 8gb of ram and a 3.5ghz processor.
